An
Extraordinary House . . .
In
1873, the Imperial Hotel Vienna was inaugurated by Emperor
Franz Joseph in person.
It
was given the rank of "Imperial and Royal Court Hotel" to
host kings, queens and presidents from all over the
world.
The
former town-palace of the Duke of Wurttenberg had been
converted into a delux hotel.
At
that time, Vienna was the capital of the Austro-Hungarian
monarchy and the residence of the Emperor.
Throughout
its sometimes turbulent existence, the "Imperial" remained
Austria's first hotel, a shining example of the continuity
of tradition in the heart of Europe, which has proved itself
a center of European culture and civilization.
Today
the Imperial Hotel is, as it always has been, the leading
hotel of Vienna, seat of United Nations organizations, an
international meeting place and a center of communication
between East and West.
